Before they were multi-story icons, the Shoemakers

Before they were multi-story icons, the Shoemakers were just shoemakers in the cramped tenements of industrial desperation.

Barnaby Shoemaker lived inside the machine. His wife, Maude, ran an industrial steam press while he tried to market scrap fabric as "artisanal insoles." Through sheer grit and massive insecurity, Barnaby eventually built his monument: a towering, salmon-pink brick cathedral of cobbling with an aggressive mint-green sign visible for miles.

Then came the pivot. Traumatized by the smell of boiling tanbark, Barnaby shifted to slumlord status, outsourcing shoe production back to the very slums he’d escaped.

The empire eventually fell to his grandson, Garrison E. Shoemaker—a deeply neurotic man who utterly despised shoes. Garrison was convinced shoelaces were tiny hibernating serpents, so he spent his days wandering dusty aisles cutting the strings off unsold inventory (including the "Shoemaker Safety Heel," which mostly just ejected the wearer’s ankle).

When the footwear empire inevitably imploded, Garrison used what was left to pivot one final time. He became an eye doctor.

Today, he rests beneath a slab of red granite that proudly bears his ultimate achievement: Dr. of Optometry. After generations of forcing the family name into footwear, the last great Shoemaker spent his life just making sure people could see where they were walking.
